California
Junior Scholarship Federation
What is it?
The
California Junior Scholarship Federation is a statewide honor society that was
founded for the purpose of fostering high standards of scholarship, service and
citizenship in the middle school grades.
CJSF emphasizes service to the school and the community while creating
pride in scholastic achievement. The
CJSF provides an introduction to its high school equivalent, the California
Scholarship Federation. Participation in
the CSF as a high school student can lead to recognition and scholarships upon
graduation from high school.
Who is eligible?
7th
and 8th graders who qualify in one trimester can apply during the first
three weeks of the following trimester.
Membership is neither automatic nor compulsory.
How do you qualify?
Grades
are given a point value. An “A” is 3
points, a “B” is 1 point, and a “C” is 0 points. A “D” or an “F” in any subject disqualifies a
student from membership. Only Math,
Science, English, Social Studies and Elective courses that give letter grades
are used to determine eligibility. PE
and credit/no credit classes cannot be used to determine eligibility. For membership, the number of points earned
must be twice the number of academic subjects in which the student is enrolled,
i.e., ten (10) points must be earned by a student enrolled in 5 eligible courses,
or eight (8) points must be earned by a student enrolled in 4 eligible courses.
What is Honor Membership?
Students
who qualify for two trimesters in 7th grade and two trimesters in 8th
grade can achieve Honor Membership in CJSF.
Honor Membership will be noted in the student’s cumulative record and
will be acknowledged with the official gold seal on the certificate of promotion
at the conclusion of 8th grade.
Honor members will also receive an Honor Membership pin at the 8th
grade promotion ceremony.
What is the service component of CJSF?
CJSF
members are expected to volunteer a minimum of 5 hours of service in the community each trimester. Examples include but are not limited to tutoring
(on campus or cross age), assisting at sports events, helping with Interact or
Student Council activities, helping with
the book fair, volunteering in a church
or community activity, helping with campus cleanup and so on.
Are there meetings of the CJSF?
The
state charter requires a minimum of one meeting a trimester. A president and vice president must be
elected for each year. Meetings create
an opportunity to plan for service projects, guest speakers, and field trips.
Who can I contact about BHS’s chapter of CJHS?
The
advisor of CJSF is JT O’Neill (joneill@sebusd.org)
