Cross Country
Congratulations to the BHS Cross Country team for another winning year! Brook Haven boys dominated this year's Ragle Range Run with Juan Vivar taking 3rd place, Shane Cotherman--2nd place, and Nate Kuhn in 1st place. Elsa Einstein took 2nd in the girls series helping BHS to win this year's team trophy. The team ran about 50 miles during their ten week spring season and 50 miles during the fall.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, to the Sebastopol Education Foundation and to the PTSA!!!
Your generous donations allowed Brook Haven students to experience and partake in many enriching opportunities this year. Camp Caz, the Renaissance Fair, Marine World, as well as many other activities - including the athletic program, could not have been as successful without your assistance. The Brook Haven Staff is truly grateful and offers you our great big THANK YOU!!!
Site Council
The Brook Haven site council held its final meeting of the year on May 19th. We discussed plans for next year, and wrapped up this year's business. We were successful in achieving our goal of supplying every room on the Brook Haven campus with an emergency supply bag. We will be looking for new site council nominees for next year's council. If you are interested in being on site council for the 2008/2009 school year or would like to nominate someone, please contact the Brook Haven office at 829-4590.
Student Council
Brook Haven's Student Council wrapped up a productive and fun year with a lunch time pizza party on Monday, June 2nd. Part of the role of student council is to plan and support campus activities that add to a sense of community and fun. The group's enthusiasm and hard work this year resulted in some great dances, several Òjust for funÓ contests, and a few school spirit activities. Thanks for a job well done!
Graduation Dinner Dance
Our eighth graders will have the opportunity to celebrate their promotion to high school at an eighth grade dinner dance on Friday, June 6. Eighth grade parents have worked together to provide a wonderful dinner followed by dancing and several raffles. The theme for the dance is a secret but if the whispers in the office give a hint, it promises to be a memorable evening. Thanks, again, to all parents who helped with this event.
Dress Code
The warm spring weather is such a pleasure after the cold winter. We do want to remind parents, however, that the warm weather brings out the too short shorts, the spaghetti straps, and other apparel more suitable for the beach or the home. Please remind your children that BHS does have a dress code and they will be asked to call home for a change of clothing if dressed inappropriately.
Positive Incentive Program
The staff at Brook Haven Middle School wants to shine the spotlight on positive student behavior. We like to be able to celebrate the good things going on all around our campus every day. Each adult on campus is noticing students who are making positive choices and rewarding them with a ticket for a weekly raffle. Every Friday morning, we have a drawing and a winner is announced from each of our four grade levels.
Check here weekly to see who the winners are!

4/5 Gold Country Trip
On Wednesday May 21, the 4th- 5th grade REACH class started their journey to the gold country. It lasted three days and was jam packed with California history, western movement and demonstrations of the continuous quest to get rich quick! Although the journey was short it was filled with fun and learning.
Wednesday we drove to Sacramento and saw an amazing movie at the I-Max theatre. The movie was called ÒWild CaliforniaÓ. It was very inspiring and was about all the amazing things that people do in California. Next we went to the California Museum of History, Women and the Arts. We learned about how people lived in the gold rush times.

We went to Sutter's Fort and looked through the buildings. Then we drove through Hangtown (Placerville) to get to Coloma. We went to the Marshall Gold Discovery Park where gold was first discovered in 1848. We climbed on huge rocks and saw a replica of Sutter's Mill. Later, we saw a play about gold in California. My dad played the sheriff. Then we went to a park that had a beach by the river next to dramatic mountains. We panned for gold and had dinner there. After that we went to Sutter's Mill School and slept in the gym.
-Milla Kapur
Thursday morning we got up, left Coloma and went to Columbia. In Columbia we panned for gold and everybody got some! Next we explored the town and visited places like the chicken coop, candy store, bookstore, jail, dentist and blacksmith's workshop. Next we went to the Church of the 49er where we spent the night.

Sixth Grade Community Service
The sixth graders wrote and rehearsed Mother's Day poems and now the only thing left to do was follow Ms. Dalessio down the road to the Senior Center. We were all a bit nervous and nobody wanted to go first. Each of us stood in the front of the room one by one and recited our poems, which were all followed by the seniors' clapping. As we performed, Bonnie Van Anda and Ms. Dalessio passed out roses, fruit salad, and chocolate covered strawberries. Then we all trooped out again, thinking that the day had been a success.

Sixth Graders Attend Greek Games
In the morning we were suiting up for the big day in togas and laurel wreaths. Everyone was excited but trying not to show it. Would we be the only ones dressed in silly togas? When we finally arrived at Willowside Middle School a teacher came out to greet us and with a smile on his face he said proudly, ÒWelcome to the Greek Games!Ó
We were led to a half circle of stone benches, an amphitheater, where they performed plays that we thought would most likely anger the gods of Olympus by putting humorous twists on each play such as ÒHades' I-podÓ or ÒFashion show for the gods.Ó Our play ÒThe Marriage of Psyche and Cupid,Ó was so serious.
When it all was finally over we moved onto the games. Ready-set-go. Bang! We were off, dirt flying behind us as we raced around the track for 4 laps before we finally were done. The mile there seemed much longer than back at BHMS. Onto the next activity, the 100 mile dash. Next was
the relay, which wasn't very fun. Four people ran with small pipes and handed them to their partner. Many other sports were played (shot put, javelin, discus, king of the hill) and the day basically wrapped up from there. I don't think any of us will forget the day we participated in the Greek Games.

Renaissance Fair for Seventh Graders
The REACH 7th graders participated in the 10th annual Renaissance Faire organized by Brook Haven social studies teacher Andrea Hagan-Schmitz along with students from Brook Haven and Twin Hills.
The students dressed in costumes of the period, including tunics and long skirts. They were dressed for various roles as blacksmiths, distillers, ironmongers and members of other guilds or trades of the day. Students learned how they would have lived in medieval times and about the skills they would have needed to survive. They could try cheese, chain mail and candle making; play chess at Ye Olde Chess Shoppe; take Latin lessons on a log in the sunshine and study Weaponry 1A.
