Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy

The Brook Haven staff recognizes the strong connection between attendance and school success.‬‭ Frequent absences or tardies result in a student missing valuable classroom instruction, including‬‭ participation in discussion and group activities. There is no substitute for being present in the‬‭ classroom. Furthermore, students are required by law to attend school each day unless ill or excused‬‭ for other explained absenc‬‭es.‬

‭The Sebastopol Union School District receives a majority of its financial support based upon average daily‬‭ attendance (ADA). We only receive ADA when students are present;‬‭ ANY‬‭ absence results in a loss of‬‭ funding. Though we do not want students to attend school when ill, we do encourage families to avoid‬‭ unnecessary absences.‬

‭Absences‬

Absence from school shall be excused only for health reasons, family emergencies, and justifiable personal‬‭ reasons, as permitted by law, Board Policy, and Administrative Regulations (Ed. Code 46010, 48216,‬‭ 48205). Excessive absences may impact a student’s academic or social development. When a student‬‭ reaches‬‭ four‬‭ (4) absences in a year, the school will‬‭ contact parents/guardians regarding attendance issues‬‭ and‬‭ an attendance meeting will be scheduled.‬

‭Excessive absences will result in a truancy notification letter to the parent. If necessary, the case will be‬ directed to the county’s School Attendance Review Board after the third such letter.‬

Attendance Procedures‬

‭In order to meet state requirements, the school must keep complete and accurate attendance records‬‭ including all absences and their reasons. Please follow the steps as outlined below:‬

  • Submit a note through ParentSquare electronically or bring a note that includes the student‬‭ name, the date(s) of absence, the reason for‬‭ absence,‬‭ and the signature of the student's parent or‬‭ guardian. If the absence is for a medical or dental appointment, please bring the note provided‬‭ by the doctor or dentist to the office.‬
  • ‬‭Parents/Guardians may also phone the office (829-4590) to report an absence.‬
